Super Trey League

A friend of mine, kirbyhat5, plays a lot of VGC with his group of friends. They wanted to start up a VGC draft league and invited me to participate in it. I enjoy VGC a lot, probably more than singles honestly. Just I don't have a lot of exposure to it as most the people I play with play a lot of singles. It was a small league of some of his friends, some of which haven't touched Pokemon since Black/White, so a bit unbalanced in terms of skill level. At the end of the day though, it was a lot of fun to play! Modern VGC is definitely a lot, but in a draft setting it wasn't as overwhelming to have answers for all the major hitters.

The Squad

Urshifu-S (Urshiboo)

Was not expecting to get a 20 pointer from my draft position, but here we are. This guy is easy to use, pick 4 moves, slap a Choice Band/Scraft on him, and watch him take lives.

raging bolt png
Raging Bolt (Big Bolt)

I've heard this guy does great in VGC, but I don't think I played him very well. Draft VGC is different than standard, so maybe against standard threats he's great. I dunno, I wasn't all that impressed.

heatran gif
Heatran (Shield)

Bulky Steel type with Flash Fire, Will-o-Wisp, and so many pokemon don't want to get burned. He did great for giving my team better survivability, but covered a lot of weaknesses that my main core focused on.

alolan ninetales gif
Ninetales-Alola (Aurora)

Prior to our draft, a VGC player won a tournament with Ninetales-A and Articuno. I know hail got a buff this generation, and blizzard is so good in doubles, and it was unstoppable throughout the league.

mismagius gif
Mismagius (Witchbrook)

Didn't use Mismagius that much, but it did come a couple time to disrupt their teams with Choice Spec/Scarf Trick. It managed to get a couple of kills, but nothing too crazy.

articuno gif
Articuno (Alaska)

Articuno was easily the MVP of the team. Just Choice Spec Blizzard was unstoppable, even just the threat of the strategy would trip players up when I would switch it up. So happy to see this Pokemon finally get to shine.

gyarados gif
Gyarados (Katrina)

Most of the time I ran a supportive Gyarados. He has decent SpD, but a lot of utility moves in Thunder Wave, Helping Hand, Icy Wind, Taunt, and Intimidate on top of it all. It was unusual, but he did the job well!

toedscruel png
Toedscruel (Shiitake)

I really wanted to have this guy work out, but it just didn't work. He only came once due to how frail he is from many threats, and his ability just hinders his usability soooo much. He felt like dead weight the one week he came.

delphox gif
Delphox (Just a Fox)

Delphox was a lot of fun with the amount of spread moves it got. Pretty nice coverage and had utility in Helping Hand. I don't think she was as strong as in singles, but still fun to use nevertheless.

stantler gif
Stantler (???)

Literally never used him. I tried to make him fit on the team, as intimidate is so good in VGC. He just got obliterated by everything that it just didn't make sense over all my other options.

hisuian sneasel gif
Sneasel-Hisui (Lil Celery)

Fake Out - Feint - Coaching + Urshifu. This little guy was a menace and kind of became a meme in the league. I was almost able to beat the top rated player with this surprise set. He's funny and I like him.
